Front-End Engineer - Payments

Job description

A better internet is possible, one that empowers people to choose how their personal information is used. This might seem daunting, or even impossible, but at Proton, building this better internet is what we do every day.

Proton was founded in 2014 by a group of scientists who met at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Our first product, Proton Mail, is now the world’s largest encrypted email service. Subsequent Proton products, such as Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, and Proton Drive, use end-to-end encryption that gives our users full control over how and with whom their data is shared.

Today, Proton is making privacy universally accessible to more than 70 million registered users, including journalists, some of the world’s largest organizations, and people in more than 180 countries. Our diverse and dynamic team is made up of more than 400 members representing over 30 different nationalities. While we are based in Geneva, Switzerland, we have offices in Zurich, Prague, London, Vilnius, Skopje, Taipei, and many more employees working remotely around the world.

New York Times journalists, some of the world’s largest corporations, and millions of ordinary citizens use our products so they can choose who, if anyone, sees their information. Join us at one of Europe’s fastest-growing companies to help us solve challenging problems and build new products that will reach hundreds of millions of people. We want to create more than just one of the world’s most impactful tech companies, we want to create a new internet that serves the interests of all people. We need you, your voice, your ideas, and your ambition to make it happen.

Purpose of the role

The goal of the Payments team is to integrate online payments using dedicated providers and client libraries to facilitate the operations of our business. The technical implementation of payments is shared across all Proton products and its smooth operation is a key criterion in our success.

As a first Front-end Engineer in the team, you will be in charge of bringing the Payments at Proton together and creating more streamlined, centralized and efficient payment processing. We do not have front-end integration with payment providers but use server-side processing instead (due to security reasons). In the beginning, we expect you to work on erasing the technical debt and the next step should be to create a set of core modules that all of our clients will integrate. There is a huge opportunity for an ambitious SW Engineer to work on a greenfield project and potentially to also build the team of Front-end Engineers within the Payments team.

What you will do

  • Build scalable, reliable, and secure web applications
  • Build complex front-end logic to handle encryption and decryption, caching, synchronization, performance optimization and third-party provider integration (such as payments)
  • Write software to improve web app reliability (unit tests, automated testing)
  • Find elegant solutions to usability problems
  • Initiate new web technologies that will make Proton better
  • Work on product integration with payments platforms

Job requirements

  • Strong using JavaScript and working on concepts such as asynchronous programming, closures, and ES6, at a minimum.
  • Proficient in using React.
  • Proven proficiency with TypeScript.
  • Experience using RESTful APIs.
  • You test your own code using automated tests, writing unit tests at a minimum (e.g. using Jest, Mocha, Cypress, Playwright).
  • You are product-minded and committed to building the best user experience.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, and collaborative environment.

Bonus points for

  • Well versed in security and with a good understanding of security best practices from an application development standpoint.
  • Experience using DevOps processes and practices (including CI/CD).
  • Experience working in a distributed team.
